To find out whether older generations could indeed pass along immunity, the researchers injected 60 urban pigeons with haemocyanin — a protein that transports oxygen in some invertebrates, including
keyhole limpets.
This idiopathic protein is added to an adjuvant growth factor,
keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH)-- a protein derived from a giant sea mollusk found off the California coast — known to provoke a strong immune response.
These were then formulated into experimental vaccines by conjugation to
keyhole limpet hemocyanin as a carrier peptide and aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant.
Male cats (n = 12) were divided into groups of three and were immunized once with 0 (sham), 50, 200, or 400 microg synthetic GnRH coupled to
keyhole limpet hemocyanin and combined with a mycobacterial adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity.
