Because my
sister -
in - law has celiac disease and she, my brother and their
kids avoid gluten, I made the flatbread with Bob's Red Mill gluten - free pizza crust mix.
My grandmother used Crisco for everything butter would be
in when I was a
kid due to my
sister's milk allergy, back before coconut oil was common.
My parents didn't believe
in kids» menus, nor did they believe
in feeding me or my
sisters anything separate from what they ate.
The
kids loved the time spent with cousins — and I loved my time with my
sisters -
in - love and my three sweet and very special nieces Katie, Emie and Annie.
There was more excitement than security
in racing, however, and the Sutcliffe
kids — Rick has a younger brother, Terry, and a
sister, Sherri — got used to spending weekends with their grandparents, Bill and Alice Yearout.
I was either
in denial or I believed a culmination of big -
sister training I had obtained, or maybe hubby and me chaperoning high - risk
kids on dance nights (and yes I was the mama to tell them if they were dancing too close)-- but we thought nothing of it.
I've got no
kids myself, but I had wondered
in the past how my
sister would deal with poopy nappies on a long flight.
I traveled with my husband, infant son (8 months), my
sister in law and two
kids (13 & 4).
We had very little
in the way of toys when I was a
kid, but we did have a set of jacks and I spent a ton of time playing jacks with my
sisters.
Both
kids (and despite the legal distinction that they are of majority age, they are still
kids at that age, especially considering that both have been traumatized by the loss of their
sister a few years ago) felt abandoned, and have had barely any contact with their mother
in the five months that she's been gone (their mother has initiated no contact with our children, one of whom still lives with me and commutes to college, while the other is a college freshman, but who comes here during vacations).
My
sister complains that I should miss her while I'm gone too, but I can have
in - depth phone conversations with her ---- you can't do that with very little
kids and pets!
A few weeks ago we met up with my
sister - and brother -
in - law along with their two
kids at Lake Skaneateles
in upstate New York.
In all cases, parents should pay close attention, so that their other
kids don't feel pushed aside by the demands of their sick brother or
sister.
While I always welcomed the creative creatures and inventions into our home, I was disappointed that many of them were adorned with things that had likely been purchased at dollar stores (i.e. pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, googly eyes), which
in addition to being wasteful also made most of them choking hazards for my younger son (80 % of the
kids had baby brothers or
sisters at home).
If you have someone
in your home with a food allergy, you can dedicate one lid to that person... and label it as such - so if my
sister takes the
kids for a picnic, she'll know that the orange lid is for her
kid and will be 100 % safe for her, and that the green is my little guy's, and he can eat anything
in that without concern.
Some of the food we will be serving will be «leftovers» from my
sister in law's graduation party that will be the day before my
kids party.
Like my
sisters, who've all but given up peanut butter, and milk
in sippy cups, and Cheez - its for the
kids — just so their homes are safe for Sam.
With 4 little ones, it's easy to get discouraged when I find that my
sister -
in - law has her
kids in soccer and baseball and swimming, and they're camping and doing crafty things, and they're vacationing at all of these wonderful places, while the six of us are at home, playing
in our backyard with nothing more than a swing set.

The eldest of four girls (Jennifer lost her elder
sister Stacey
in an accident when they were
kids), Jennifer dedicates her time and energy to helping our most vulnerable.
After the birth of her first child
in 2007, motherhood inspired her to start a
sister site, The Fashionable Bambino, to talk about fashionable maternity clothes, nursing, natural birth, cloth diapering, cute
kid's clothes and more.
Yum My mother
in law used to do fondue quite a bit when my husband and
sister in law were
kids.
Though I have performed several volunteer efforts from being a «Big
Sister» to working
in organic farms, to food banks to troubled teenagers, senior citizens, abused
kids, arts etc but I had never built a playground.
I don't have
kids in diapers anymore, but my
sister does.
Her mom, my
sister in law, is one my best friends and has been the most incredible aunt to my four
kids.
My youngest
sister, who had no
kids at the time, would come over
in the afternoon and take the baby so I could have an afternoon nap.
In a small percentage of families, the conflict between brothers and
sisters is so severe that it disrupts daily functioning, or particularly affects
kids emotionally or psychologically.
