It will be here just
in time for what I call
cooking season (when the
kids» fall sports end and I can hunker down
in the
kitchen on the weekend).
I enjoy slowing down
in the
kitchen because I love to
cook and can focus on the process more with an extra set of grownup hands to help with the juggling of our 3
kids.

Throughout my culinary career I have worked
in everything from assistant food styling for a
kids cooking show, to being a
kitchen - ninja and occasional judge for a kick - ass taste test column, to fresh pasta - maker.
I grew up eating these
in Croatia, spending every summer at my grandmother's who had a giant sour cherry tree right outside her
kitchen window... as
kids, we used to climb it and sit amidst the cherries for hours, only coming down at bedtime, with stained shirts and hands:) Almost seems a sin to

in a pie and not eat them fresh...... looks awesome, though!!
By the time I made waffles for the third time, I had a
kitchen full of dirty dishes, paper towels all around, two bowls full of unused «failed» batter or better If I say «dough», and one batch tossed down the sink disposer, and I was standing there covered with as much flour as you can imagine, very much frustrated, thinking like a mad scientist where it went wrong while regular waffles with all purpose flour were

As a
kid, I slathered it on saltines alongside chocolate milk during cartoon - drenched Saturday mornings; I ate it
in sandwiches for lunch throughout my teen years; once I acquired my own
kitchen in which to experiment
in my 20s, I packed it into celery hollows for snacks, baked it
in cookies, muffins or the occasional Rice Krispie square; later, I ate it straight out of the jar for an immediate PMS pick - me - up, or after a late night when I was too tired to
cook.

I think the director of the program created a program that schools could implement & maybe wrote a book... I'll never forget the part
in Super Size Me when the school for
kids kicked out of other schools changed the menu to healthy, real,
cooked in a
kitchen food & behavior problems diminished.
He doesn't dumb down his food and
kids rise to the occasion, eating foods that I know my own district would be afraid to serve on the theory that «
kids just don't like X.» And he clearly doesn't feel that his job ends with the service of a meal — as discussed above, he uses his time and energy to bring
kids into the
kitchen, providing
cooking and nutrition education that will serve his students well
in the long run.
His program at Holy Trinity is telling us some important things about
kids and school food — namely, that food doesn't need to be «dumbed down» for
kids to accept it; that
kids implicitly understand when deep care is being put into the preparation of their food and they respond with equal respect; and that improving school food can change
kids» attitudes about food outside the school yard gates, as was the case with the student quoted by Chef Boundas who cut back on fast food now that he's eating healthful foods at lunch and learning about nutrition and
cooking in Chef Boundas's
kitchen.
