kid finding a program that's right for him at one
level but only in science, or maybe nothing, at the next
level and youngsters welcomed into «gifted» program as late as ninth
grade who find no openings in suitable high schools starting in tenth.
There's a lot
of content and important stuff in between, but if our
kids can't read at
grade level, they'll never do as well as they could or should with the rest.»
Indeed, the list
of strategies applied is a long one: frequent online assessments to diagnose and direct students to the appropriate activity; open - ended assignments allowing
kids of varying skill
levels to engage at their own
levels; coteaching in which two teachers share responsibility for a group
of kids; and looping, in which teachers follow
kids from one
grade to the next.

of Latino and 65.2 percent
of American Indian and Alaska Native
kids to become proficient in reading; by 2014 - 2015, far lower than the proficiency rates for white and Asian peers; Tar Heel State leaders expect districts bring black, Latino, and Native students to proficiency
levels of 69.3 percent, 71.7 percent, and 72.2 percent, respectively, by 2015.
Even though, as NPR reports, in some classes as many as over 50 %
of children are performing above
grade level, unofficially, school principals and superintendents tell parents that if their
kids are bored, that's what Gifted and Talented programs are for.
The founders wanted a school that would get
kids to
grade level; an educational program that supported
kids to explore essential questions, learn to reflect upon their own learning and construct student - led projects with community relevance; and to have a rich offering
of arts, PE, and sports.
Gifted students are likely going to be ready for those despite what we do in school, and in many cases they walk into school already proficient on
grade level content, so there is no need to expend precious dollars and personnel boosting the achievement
of kids who need no boost.
