So when it comes to improving school meals, health advocates logically want to remove the items that win out over healthier fare: nixing sugary chocolate milk, for example, so kids have to take white milk, or making sure pizza isn't offered on the same day as a healthier entree.

Most importantly, given the almost 14 million kids who eat school breakfast every day, I'm hopeful that the AHA recommendation, along with the new DGA on added sugar, will eventually make insanely sugary school breakfasts like this one (offered in my district before recent reforms were instituted) a thing of the past:

Every year I really enjoy seeing all the cute kids my family and friends share on their First Day of School across social media.

Adding calories to lunch doesn't help kids on school holidays, on weekends, on half - days, and during the summer (I've found there is a lag between the beginning / end of school and the summer lunch program — don't know if that is everywhere or just here.)

We have friends whose kids are going to the public kindergarten (only 1/2 day) with the «wraparound» enrichment program for the rest of the day; their little ones are already stressed out because they have just 2.75 hours in school, during which they're basically being trampled on with mountains of «instruction,» and the wraparound program gives just 20 minutes for lunch while foregoing rest time in favor of «reading instruction» and «homework help.»

Others (including me) told of how their kids came home hungry every day, or finished their lunches on the walk home from school.

Once the kids are packed off to school I divide the day between crocheting, yarn, working on my websites and fulfilling orders.
