I got caught up in all the minutiae
of raising my
kids — was this the right
diaper for them, is it cloth or is it disposable — all the little things will work their way
out in time.
At the end
of the day, it doesn't matter how you fed your
kid, whether you used a stroller or an ergo, if you went on a nice vacation because you had extra money from cloth
diapering, or if you used time
outs or natural consequences.
You could also clip one to the stroller for
outings where you're not bringing the
diaper bag, or when your
kids are FINALLY
out of diapers.
Diaper blow -
outs, doctor appointments, commitments with older
kids, colds or flu bugs, or even baby getting older and simply aging
out of certain stages will require you to adjust and readjust through the toddler years.
While it may be tempting to leave these things on the back burner until your
kid is
out of diapers, it's best to take the plunge and start thinking about them before your baby arrives.
Nursing, changing
diaper, changing spit - up clothes (baby's and yours), made a cup
of tea, spent an hour trying to get in 10 minutes
of Tummy Time so the baby won't be a dolt, spent 40 minutes getting the baby down for a nap which ended up lasting 20 minutes, made lunch and spilled half
of it on the baby's head, clothing changes all around, nursing, found now - cold cup
of untouched tea and drank it anyway, more nursing, baby falls asleep on you but wakes up if you try to move him so you just stay slumped on the couch with one leg forward and the other bent uncomfortably under you because this
kid needs to sleep or we'll all diiieeee, nursing, realize you forgot about the weekly mothers» meeting which was your only adult
outing dammit and now who will be your friend?
So far I have freaked
out about doubling the amount
of children in our house, where the babies are going to sleep, cloth
diapering, starting completely over with baby clothes instead
of trying to sort through what would be usable, nursing two babies at the same time, buying a bigger house, how I'm going to drive four
kids around (thank God we just replaced my husband's car in January with a full size SUV with a usable third row), traveling with four
kids, what happens if my husband has to start traveling for work, getting the big
kids to and from school with two babies in tow, how the big
kids are going to feel once there are two new babies in the house, how I»M going to feel with two more babies in the house, and so on and so forth.
Although my older son is slowly transitioning
out of diapers, some days, I find myself with two
kids and a whole lot
of dirty
diapers on my hands.
With all
of the options
out there about cloth
diapers vs. disposable ones, formula feeding your baby vs. sticking with the boob, and deciding to eat your placenta vs. tossing it — and the assumption that, in most cases, choosing one thing means choosing only that thing to the exclusion
of all other things, which is totally not how it works in real life — there is already too much to think about besides how everyone else feels you should decide to raise your
kid.
Maybe it was because I had two
of them to train at once, maybe it was because the idea
of worrying about finding a bathroom at a moment's notice when we're
out in public freaked me
out, or maybe because having them in
diapers was just so much easier (albeit, you know, kind
of icky), but I really had no desire at all to push potty training on my
kids.

I think the pendulum swung in the seventies from the
out of diapers by 2 belief to let them go at their own time for two main reasons, one people were getting mad at their
kids and pressuring them to potty train and disposables made it a lot easier not to put the effort into potty training them early.
I know that so many people have such strong opinions about certain
diapers, but in my opinion, I've used all the kinds
of diapers on my 3
kids, and feel like if your
kid is going to have a blow
out, any
diaper might leak.
My
kids may be
out of diapers (well, Rebecca is ALMOST), but I'm definitely still a huge fan and supporter
of cloth
diapers.
They're so freaking cute that my
kids are nearly
out of diapers completely and I still have a huge stash I don't know how I will ever part with!

Hate the idea
of throwing
out hundreds and hundreds
of disposable
diapers as your
kid goes from tiny to walking around on their own?
On the other hand, computers have a really hard time recognizing a particular voice or face in a crowd; something most
kids learn to do before they're even
