Writer - director Shane Black's horribly enjoyable action comedy The Nice Guys is an jauntily arch return to this tradition, the
story of two dishevelled and incompetent private
detectives in 1970s Los Angeles — played by Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling — who have been expensively tasked with solving the mystery surrounding the death
of a missing porn actress, and what other
kind of fascinatingly damaged female character can there be?
The mixture
of patriotic drama,
detective story and espionage thriller knits together in the second half and pays off in a climactic bit
of poetic justice that is a fantasy, a
kind of con caper played on the Gestapo, yet is oddly satisfying despite the terrific cost in innocent lives.
I love memoir because it brings me so close to the writer's emotional experience, but Julie Metz's
story goes even further by creating the
kind of suspense usually associated with a
detective novel.
Sure, it amuses me that we've somehow reverted back to using pixellated graphics and text - only
stories despite spending so much time and effort getting away from them, but when it's as enjoyable as The Darkside
Detective it's
kind of hard to care.
