I've taken some heat for my defense of
the kindergarten reading standards, but I'm sticking to my guns.
Not exact matches
Now, with the advent of the Common Core, a set of rigorous
reading and math
standards for students in
kindergarten through 12th grade that has been adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia, educators say the pressure to prepare young children is growing more intense.
The
standards call for students in
kindergarten through grade five to
read an equal amount of fiction and nonfiction.
Included in this book are 10 easy - to - use, research - and
standards - based literacy centers that each align with essential
kindergarten skills and that focus on the five areas of
reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.
Fetters shuffles through her papers and
reads the old Indiana
standard for a skill taught in
kindergarten, phonemic awareness.
Reading and writing grade by grade: Primary literacy
standards for
kindergarten through third grade.
That kind of inconsistency in educational
standards is what the Common Core — academic guidelines for
kindergarten through high school
reading and math that were adopted by more than 40 states — was intended to redress.
Next year, all schools will fully implement the
standards, which lay out what students are expected to learn in
reading and math in
kindergarten through twelfth grade.
A t the beginning of
kindergarten, the math and
reading achievement gaps between children in the bottom and top income quintiles amount to more than a full
standard deviation.
The report examines alignment of
standards, curriculum, instruction and assessment; early childhood and
kindergarten; identification, intervention and retention; and teacher preparation and training for
reading instruction.
As with the writing of the
kindergarten standards, not one English teacher, college English professor, or researcher about
reading and writing wrote the Common Core English Language Arts
Standards, which can govern all of literacy education K - 12 if we let them.
In the real world, there is simply no useful place for a Common Core
Standard that requires that, «All students must demonstrate the ability to
read emergent reader texts with purpose and understanding by the last day of
kindergarten.»
I am also not a fan of the «with prompting and support» line in a bunch of the
Kindergarten Common Core
reading standards.
