Risk of heart attack was significantly higher during the first postoperative month in those who had
knee replacement surgery compared to those in the non-surgical group, and gradually declined over time.
Although the risk of life - threatening complications from
knee replacement surgery is very small, people who undergo total
knee replacement are four times more likely to die in the first month after
surgery compared to those who have partial
knee replacement, and 15 per cent more likely to die in the first eight years.
