For example, periodic, pop - quiz - style research simulations might help students to see that they don't know what they don't
know about legal research.54 Either way, they need to understand that running searches is a means to an end.
There are two or more generations involved in this problematic scenario: First the Gen Y's; they may not fully appreciate what a library can do for them; and the Baby Boomers, who have forgotten what
they knew about legal research best practices and to some extent have been lulled into believing everything is free on the Internet.

Searching is a big part of
legal research, and I may be wrong
about how much share google has in it, but the couple of lawyers I
know well enough to say use tools that I doubt are counted in trends.
I don't
know about you, but I like my
legal research materials to be a little more timely than that.
Where books put concrete corners around information, electronic sources can seem to present the same information as seamlessly connected.36 Quite often, Internet researchers care less
about the nature of the information source than they do
about its content.37 And even the fee - based
legal research providers
no longer require researchers to make source selections at the outset.
Forget for a moment what we think we
know about how best to
research an unfamiliar
legal issue.
After all, throughout undergraduate school — and perhaps even during masters» programs — that's the mindset: get «enough» sources to write a paper; then write «enough» pages to meet the minimum.50 Of course, experienced lawyers
know that
legal research isn't
about getting some finite number of cases.
In short, the more that students
know about legal analysis, the more confidently they will approach the
research process, regardless of the tools they use or the order in which they use them.
No doubt
about it; we are teaching a generation of students who have done
no significant
research (of any kind) in print.57 Because other online
research seems so easy, they generally underestimate the effort involved in conducting thorough
legal research.
They are expert researchers who
know about the latest
legal resources and can teach you a lot
about the
legal research process.
[5] Other examples are not so commonly predicted (if, indeed, they are predicted at all), yet are
no less significant: business models that facilitate free
legal services, the use of non-
legal (notably industry and business) knowledge and experience to increase client trust in and comfort with the firm and with
legal services more generally, the collection of knowledge
about the
legal issues of individual clients in the same industry for use by a trade association to assist and defend the rights of all in that industry on a collective basis, a severely injured client's reassurance and comfort in
knowing that in selecting a certain
legal services provider the client is not just receiving highly specialized advice but also benefitting an association that helps others with the same type of severe injury, the development of a
legal research establishment for experimentation with different ways of providing
legal services.

It has been many years since I attended law school — while I
know we had complaints
about our
legal research and writing courses, I don't think this was our issue.
No, Thomson Reuters is not
about to go out of business or shut down its Westlaw
legal research service.
