While
shelter dogs may
no longer have to worry
about the elements or the hazards of our urban jungle, they face a different set of problems in their temporary home.
When artist Mark Barone first learnt
about the number of
dogs that get killed a day in American
shelters and rescues, he
knew he had to do something to raise awareness
about the brutal reality.
About a month or so ago, we had this young herding breed
dog who had been in and out of a local
shelter a few times and had a rough start to life, in situations that no one had the details of but
knew had been very difficult.
Because we often don't
know all the details
about how these
dogs ended up in a
shelter, the staff followed our standard procedure and called the number associated with Winnie's chip.
Recently, there was a pure bred puppy in a high kill
shelter here and «rescues» were fighting over her, when a friend inquired
about adopting the
dog she asked
about the adoption fee the rescue said it depended on certain things and that once the
dog was evaluated they would come up with a fee, so my friend asked if they had set fees and they responded
no, because some
dogs deserve a higher fee.
As a big proponent of
shelter dogs and mixed breeds, I love what they're doing to allow adoptive pet parents to
know a little more
about their new pup's background.
Often
shelters choose to work with rescue groups who
know spit
about behavior and training because those people can get the
dogs into fosters and homes, rather than actual trainers whose focus is resolution of problem behaviors through training so the
dog can STAY in the new home, and stay safely for all concerned, the
dogs and the owners.
Having spent thousands of hours in
shelters as a volunteer, I see these hapless
dogs often bounce from home to home, because
shelters are not in the business or practice of rehabilitating problem
dogs (which
shelters also don't utilize the assistance of their skilled local trainers quite enough, in part because they think they
know as much
about behavior as we trainers do, or think they
know enough).

All the couple
knows about the 15 - pound
dog is that «she was picked up as a stray and taken to the
shelter, where she probably wouldn't have survived,» Mary Anne Saunders said.
People will
no longer stand for
dogs being allowed to be neglected and abused and nothing be done
about them, or for
dogs to be yanked out of people's homes merely for the way they look, or for
dogs to be killed in the city
shelter when there are rescue groups more than willing to take in these animals.
Americans love animals to the tune of 90 million
dogs and 94 million cats in homes across the country, and yet many
know very little
about the daily work that animal control officers, veterinarians, volunteers, adoption counselors, community cat coordinators, kennel managers, behaviorists,
shelter directors and humane educators do to help the people and animals in their communities.
But at the same time, breed information, as best as
shelter employees
know it, is often the only information that
shelter staff have at their disposal to inform adopters
about a particular
dog.
Choosing a
dog from a local
shelter or rescue is a better idea than adopting a
dog you haven't met and don't
know much
about.
I wrote this article
about some of the things you should
know about Goldens, because many of them end up in
shelters, abandoned as soon as their owners have realized what having a
dog really means.
It is estimated that over 65 % of the
dogs surrendered to
shelters across the country have a behavior problem that could have been prevented with early training, or could have been solved had the owners
known some basics
about dog training and behavior.
Most
shelters will want to
know about your previous pet history, will want a number where they can obtain a vet reference, and will want to
know how you plan to take care of the
dog.
If the
dog is coming from a
shelter and we
know virtually nothing
about them, we find that a crate is a very important tool to use.
You can certainly ask the
shelter staff or volunteers to discuss the intake and evaluation process and to explain what they
know about a particular
dog's behavior.
An internet presence before many people were on the Internet, Tara teamed up with the rescue effort to bring her compassion and skill to K9Kastle, where she has saved dozens of elderly or challenged
dogs, and taught us
about the neurologically challenged cats on whose behalf the city
shelter knows to contact us directly.
Please note, as we rescue the majority of our
dogs from
shelters, we do not
know a lot
about the
dog's history, genetics, age, or behaviors.
Knowing about these risks, we adopted them anyway and were prepared for the responsibility — indeed the unpredictability — of
shelter dogs.

shelters.

What we do
know, from the survey data that follows, is that U.S. animal
shelter killing is down to
about 2.7 million per year, including
about 1.4 million cats (53 %) and 1.3 million
dogs (47 %).
If all breedings banned, and all
dogs and cats must be neutered before they leave the
shelter,

about «thousands of years» before there are
no dogs and cats to adopt.

All this hopefully helps give an answer to the emotional question
about why we train purebred
dogs almost exclusively, rather than
shelter dogs — in short, because it is often impossible to
know the trauma histories of
shelter dogs, or which breeding characteristic of the «mixed breed» might prevail when the
dog is faced with an unfamiliar situation.
You often don't
know much
about a
shelter dog's past, what abuse or neglect it might have suffered, or triggers for aggression it might have, but there are some awesome benefits to adopting versus shopping, too.
We try to set the right expectations
about anything that we
know about the pet before you adopt (
dogs / puppies need training and possibly housebreaking, separation anxiety is possible in
dogs abandoned at
shelters, puppies tend to cry the first few days,
dogs / puppies need regular exercise to be good
dogs, etc...) but if you are experiencing a problem, we want to help you fix it.
And while I worry and care
about all pets in sub-standard
shelters and pounds,
knowing that my own
dog suffered in a particularly terrible one is hard to think
about.

I have always
known when it's time for a
dog of my own I would adopt because I believe all
dogs deserve a loving home and it pains me to think
about shelter dogs living in kennels.
