I didn't even
know there were
sugar cane plantations in that parish I just thought I was going to be baptizing children and marrying couples and burying the dead — what any ordinary priest would do in his parish even if I
knew it was in the context
of poverty.
I
know that Kraft completely redid their entire line last year to use lots
of great ingredients (real tomatoes,
cane sugar, etc) and their sauces are really good.
Not only does white grape juice mute the flavor
of the fresh fruit and allow for less
of the volume
of the product to be fresh fruit and more to be inexpensive grape juice, but the travesty is that white grape juice is
no better for the diabetic than pure
cane sugar.
If you have followed me for a while you
know that I don't use regular
cane sugar that often but I find that the flavor
of alternative sweeteners just doesn't always pair well with certain drinks.
The only change I would make is to use maple syrup instead
of cane sugar (it comes out
of our taps here in Canada, you
know).
Unfortunately I don't
know any alternatives, but you could try adding an additional 2 tablespoons
of cane sugar in place
of the syrup and increasing the cream
of tartar to 1/4 teaspoon.

I don't
know if you considered the sweetness equivalency factor, i.e. how much date
sugar does it take to achieve a level
of sweetness equal to
cane sugar, or any
of the other sweeteners.For instance, if it takes 1/4 cup
of date
sugar to adequately sweeten a smoothie vs. only a teaspoon
of regular
sugar, then the comparison would have different results.
Once you become acquainted with the natural taste
of the food you eat without added
cane sugar your taste buds will normalise and you will
no longer crave the processed
cane sugars.

know what nutritional yeast is (I didn't really), here's the cliff's notes: unlike the type
of yeast that's used to catalyze the fermentation process for bread and beer, nutritional yeast is made from
sugar cane (not hops) and is deactivated.
