These are skills
of three kinds: cross-cultural efficacy, an interest and positive disposition toward cultural difference; foreign language skills; and
knowledge of world history,
geography and global processes such as trade, international law, environmental and health challenges.
In a 2006 article, Citizenship, Identity and Education: Examining the public purposes
of schools in an age
of globalization, Harvard Graduate School
of Education Professor Fernando Reimers stressed the importance
of teaching tolerance and global values, as well as developing foreign language skills and
knowledge of world history, cultures, and
geography.
In addition to rounding out kids»
knowledge base to include a nuanced understanding
of world geography and cultures, schools must teach them the skills to use this
knowledge as active and engaged citizens.
There may be a number
of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware
of, so the posters also help them develop their general awareness,
knowledge and understanding
of world geography.
Reimers noted that he sees an opportunity to develop students» global competencies by creating a positive disposition toward cultural differences; an ability to speak, understand, and think in languages outside
of the country in which they are born; and a deep
knowledge and understanding
of world history,
geography, and global dimensions such as health, climate, and economics.
Students will gain
knowledge of flags
of the
world, important in our ever closer global cultures, and be provided with an activity
of general interest for
geography.

The two - part show (yes, exhibitions can be in two different places at the same time too) curated by the foundation's recently installed artistic director, Venus Lau (formerly artistic director
of OCAT Shenzhen), offers work by 40 artists in a variety
of media exploring the ways in which geometry,
geography and its relation to global networks
of knowledge - sharing influence our sense
of location within the
world.
Buyers and agents from other parts
of the
world think in terms
of geography and want to know they're dealing with an expert in a particular market, rather than a generalist with minimal
knowledge of a much larger area.
