The whole reason I started my site was
to help people with
allergies enjoy their favourite
foods so it's wonderful
to know it's really doing what I intended!

But an important thing
to know about me is, I personally don't have any
food allergies.
I've been fortunate over the past few years
to get
to know many
food allergy and gluten free brands on a deeper level.
and also because i would hate
to disappoint anyone by giving them something they can't eat (you
know,
food allergies, sensitive diets, etc.).
It's actually a sulfur
allergy, so it's «
no»
to a lot of wonderful
foods!
Since we found out about Juan's
allergy to gluten, we've had
to be extremely cautious about the
food products we buy and eat, because it appears that any exposure
to gluten,
no matter how small, sets off a reaction in Juan — whether it's the bloating of his stomach, rashes, or something else.
I figured we likely had another
food allergy to add
to the list, and
knowing how common sesame
allergies were, I guess I wasn't surprised.
Having
food intolerances,
food allergies and coeliac disease myself, I
know what it feels like
to miss out - and now I
know just how hard it is when you find yourself with a mile long list of
foods you can't eat.
However, I
know a lot of folks who are adhering
to a paleo / primal diet and / or can not have legumes due
to food allergies so I wanted
to create a legume - free chili recipe suitable for a variety of diets.
(You
know I don't actually have «official»
allergies to wheat or gluten, dairy or eggs — but avoiding these
foods makes me feel better and be healthier.)

As a member of a household representing
food allergies and intolerances
to gluten, wheat, tree nuts, dairy, shellfish, fish, kiwi, and formerly soy and eggs, I
know how hard it can be
to find recipes that are safe for all.
It is difficult for someone who does not have any
food allergies / sensitivities
to understand this — making yourself more educated may give you a better understanding of how some people respond
to certain
foods — only an intelligent person would
know better than
to reply with such an insensitive response.
I
know I'm not alone and I was surprised
to learn that certain
foods can actually make your
allergy symptoms better or worse.
I
knew this going into the weekend, but decided
to just do my best, enjoy the
food from my fave restaurants as well as I was able while still minding P's
allergies, and once we got home I'd reassess my plan for the future.]

If you have someone in your home with a
food allergy, you can dedicate one lid
to that person... and label it as such - so if my sister takes the kids for a picnic, she'll
know that the orange lid is for her kid and will be 100 % safe for her, and that the green is my little guy's, and he can eat anything in that without concern.
It helps
to know you're not alone when it comes
to food allergies.
That's why there are things parents of kids with
food allergies want you
to know; because we're all in this together, so -
to - speak, and as our children start
to go out into the world, we become acutely aware that when we can't watch our children, other people can (and are.)

Even though schools do offer lunches, everyone
knows that some kids do not like school
food, or they have
allergies that will not allow them
to eat certain
foods.
Also, if you
know that your child already has
allergies to certain
foods like nuts and fish, you should be even more careful when learning how
to introduce eggs
to your baby for the first time.

know it's easy
to not worry about
food allergies if you or your kids don't have them, but for those families who do, Halloween night can be terrifying for a whole different list of reasons that don't involve ghouls and goblins.
