In this earliest Christian teaching
on liturgical participation, the word
koinonia which St Paul uses can also be translated quite properly as «communion».
What I have found most relevant is Colossians ch.3 in the light of which it is legitimate to speak of the gospel as the news of the New Man Jesus Christ («Put
on the new self, the new humanity»); and more especially it is valid to present the new fellowship of mutual forgiveness created by the Divine Forgiveness in Christ and expressed in the Eucharist and the social
koinonia of the church as the foretaste of true human community as the essential gospel («Forgiving one another as the Lord forgave you»).
How can the churches meet and dialogue
on their brave commitments to
koinonia and the unity they seek, without facing up to the fragmentation of the community of women and men?
For example, a small group in which persons experience something of the
koinonia quality of relationships will awaken Christian discipleship more effectively than many lecture sessions
on the topic.
