Massively bummed
about the lack of
kudos for Drive and Martha Marcy May Marlene, though.
Technically, the cinematography, in real nighttime conditions (
about 75 % of the film is shot in darkness), is hypnotic (the only visual flaw of the film is a too obvious imposition of a rock face that is illuminated in a lightning strike as the doctor urinates), and cinematographer Gokhan Tiryaki gets major
kudos, but, even more so is the almost nonexistent soundtrack, whose power is palpable, and shows how utterly superfluous most soundtracks are.
No one is talking
about this performance, and while it isn't my favorite of the year, it is one that I believe deserves more recognition than it got (and to be fair, I had mostly forgotten
about it myself until seeing the nominations, so I'm part of the problem), so
kudos to my colleagues for recognizing it and doing something
about it.
Regardless of how one feels
about any of their films, however,
kudos to them — both just shy of 60 — for writing and directing films
about a demographic that often does not get its fair share of screen time.
