Despite the dependence on pain relief
and a reluctance to rely on their own coping mechanisms most women appeared to construe
labour as «normal» unless they gave
birth by caesarean section.
I feel that women
and their partners do much better with privacy
and intimacy during the
birth process
and that, my role is to sometimes protect that privacy
and intimacy first of all by educating them that that might be really important
and to talk about you know the effect both positive
and negative about um, support during that time can be or even just letting people know hey, we're in
labour, the Facebook kind of thing but you know keep it quiet, keep it down, don't fritter the energy away by drawing other people to it or drawing the expectation that something's happening rather than just letting something evolve... I think guarding the space by keeping the space
as calm
and quiet
and private
as possible is key
and giving people tools to do that during the prenatal time to deal with over eager family members or friends.
We used reliable methods to assess the quality of the evidence
and looked at seven key outcomes: preterm
birth (
birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy); the risk of losing the baby in pregnancy or in the first month after
birth; spontaneous vaginal
birth (when
labour was not induced
and birth not assisted by forceps; caesarean
birth; instrumental vaginal
birth (
births using forceps or ventouse); whether the perineum remained intact,
and use of regional analgesia (such
as epidural).
Women's experiences of care reported in the original studies include maternal satisfaction with information, advice, explanation, venue of delivery
and preparation for
labour and birth,
as well
as perceptions of choice for pain relief
and evaluations of carers behaviour.
It is suggested that if the
labour room has a technological theme, this emphasises
birth as a biomedical event rather than a health event
and can be a source of stress
and fear for the woman.
Reality is that the home
birth movement gained strength
as a reaction to the terrible hospital experiences, the unnecessary c - sections
and the bad management of
labours at the hands of inexperienced residents.
When choosing a hospital
birth factors such
as travel to hospital, childcare for other children, infection, increased intervention — such
as constant observations leading to Drs saying the
labour isn't progressing
as fast
as wanted etc. when choosing a homebirth the women muct consider the possibility of emergency
and need of ambulance.
In my work
as a birthing specialist, I like to create a sacred atmosphere throughout the entire
labour and birth process.
Women who feel more in control in the reading I have done relate it to things like ambulatory ability, acceptability of vocalising their pain, social control (i.e. who is present at the
birth), environmental control
and comfort — leading them to feel more mentally able to cope with
labour and being more in control of themselves which is often highlighted
as a definer of a good
birth experience.
I am really grateful for the Gentle
Birth Method
as I had a 3.5 hour
labour and delivered my first born in a birthing pool with no medication
and no tearing.
