LABOUR FORCE KEY FINDINGS Note: It is important to distinguish between Census labour force data, and the monthly
labour force statistics that are released by the ABS.
The monthly
labour force statistics are Australia's official measure of unemployment, with data collected by interview over an eight month period from a sample of the civilian population aged 15 years and over.

In 1987, 8.6 % of the
labour force worked in sales jobs, estimates
Statistics Canada; a generation later, that figure has inched up to 9.7 %, with about 3.7 million Canadians working in «sales and service» as of September 2011.
However, the most recent
labour force survey from
Statistics Canada showed signs of hope: youth unemployment was 13.9 % in March, a 0.8 % decrease from the previous month and 0.5 % lower than the same period last year.
It also notes that according to a
Statistics Canada
Labour Force Survey, from July 2008 to July 2013, the net increase in new jobs for university graduates was 810,000, while the available jobs for those with no post-secondary education decreased by 540,000 during the same period.

That means the next
Statistics Canada snapshot of the
labour force — September employment figures are slated for release on Oct. 7 — will be very closely watched.
For these reasons the Bureau of Labor
Statistics and
Statistics Canada base their calculations on surveys: the Current Population Survey in the United States and its Canadian counterpart, The
Labour Force Survey, are conducted monthly and use a sample of between 50,000 and 60,000 households to represent the working age population in each country, those 15 years of age and older.
This is unfortunate since other
Statistics Canada surveys of earnings and income such as the
Labour Force Survey do not gather data based on racial status.

Around one million people in the UK (3 — 4 % of the
labour force) now work on zero hours contracts, according to research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD); about four times more than recent figures from the Office for National
Statistics suggested.
Statistics indicate that persons with disabilities, in comparison to non-disabled persons, have less education, are more likely to be outside the
labour force, face much higher unemployment rates, and are concentrated at the lower end of the pay scale when employed; see Minister of Human Resources Development, Persons with Disabilities: A Supplementary Paper (1994), at pp. 3 - 4, and
