The quiet
landscape of a body of water or a beckoning field provides both a literal and psychological place of discovery and confession; or simply a metaphoric snapshot for an ideal state of being.

MATRIX 255 debuts a new
body of paintings and watercolors that evoke the ice, fog, wind,
water, and light
of the Icelandic
landscape, while also tapping into more timeless, contemplative states.
In some scenes my
body is dwarfed by the primordial
landscape, as if swallowed up by nature; in others I dissolve myself, in a rush
of water, or am nearly engulfed in a creeping fog.

The new
body of work presented in the exhibition features allusive and archetypal imagery — a basket
of apples, fields
of grass, flooded
waters — symbols and
landscapes that connect the work to what Martínez Celaya has previously done.
The imagery in these works are
landscapes that include
bodies of water — A wide range
of blues are represented: from pale sky blue, to deep aqua to periwinkle and navy blue.
Each painting is grounded in a surreal depiction
of a given
landscape that emerges; landmasses, buildings, trees, and small
bodies of water materialize like islands
of shape and color amid the rich and void - like background colors that surround in the title colors.
In his fourth solo show at the gallery, Jude explores the
landscape of the Salton Sea, the famously polluted
body of water, near which the photographer spent some
of the formative years
of his childhood.
