The question of whose disobedience, and what kind of disobedience it is, are at the heart of this absorbing and moving love story from Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, his English
language debut, following
very quickly on the heels of his
film A Fantastic Woman which has been a festival - circuit hit this year.

Unfortunately where I live it can be
very difficult to track down
films in
languages other than English (only place that properly stocked them and classic
film closed down a few years ago), but this one definitely seems to be worth the extra effort to track down a copy.
Undoubtedly an undersung highlight of the festival this year, and at the

film that can transform a song (a Spanish -
language version of «Gloria,» sung by Umberto Tozzi) into a glorious ode so magnificent it's like you're hearing it for the

As for the beginning of «Happy End» — which Austria put forth as an Oscar contender for best foreign
language film (it did not make the shortlist)-- it's not
very happy either.
I think that had I watched this
film as a foreign
language movie without subtitles, my opinion of it might be
very high.
It isn't just the casting, but the
film's incorporation of sign
language into the
very fabrics of the story.
