Yesterday, two Cornell University professors said at a press conference that fracking
releases large amounts of natural gas, which consists mostly of methane, directly into the atmosphere — much more than previously thought.
This oil spill was the largest in history, with the release of 4.1 million barrels of crude oil as well
as large amounts of natural gas from a mile below the surface of the ocean.
The sudden release
of large amounts of natural gas from methane clathrate deposits has been hypothesized as a cause of past and possibly future climate changes.
However, beginning in 2009, the gap between coal and natural gas prices narrowed, as
large amounts of natural gas produced from shale formations changed the balance between supply and demand in U.S. natural gas markets.
Big oil interests are scraping away hundreds of thousands of acres in North America's Boreal forest to produce tar sands oil, and in the process
consuming large amounts of natural gas and generating three times as much global warming pollution as conventional crude oil production.
One of the most remarkable is a fire - filled excavation in Turkmenistan, called the Gates of Hell by some, that resulted when a huge cavern was accidentally breached in the early 1970s,
releasing large amounts of natural gas.
The United States also has
large amounts of natural gas.
