Meanwhile, ESO's Very
Large Telescope has taken a deep look into the Lobster
Nebula, capturing the many hot,
bright stars that influence the object's colour and shape (eso1226).
About 4,500 light - years away in the direction of the constellation Monoceros, the
nebula is
large enough to be visible through small telescopes; if it were
bright enough in the visible spectrum it could be seen by the naked eye, occupying several times as much of the sky as the full moon.
Called an «enormous Lyman - alpha
nebula» (ELAN), it is the
brightest and among the
largest of these rare objects, only a handful of which have been observed.
«It's extremely
bright, and it's probably
larger than the Slug
Nebula, but there's nothing else visible except the faint smudge of a galaxy.
