Throughout her long career, Butterfield has been assembling
large and small - scale
horses from found objects — specifically different kinds of wood, which are then cast in
bronze to create freestanding sculptures, each with a unique structure and personality.
Genghis Khan, Robert Oppenheimer, and Joan of Arc are some of the heroes and villains evoked to interrogate the typical construct of monument: that of the
larger than life
horse rider in
bronze, usually set high on a plinth.
