To refine the target catalogue for the forthcoming Taipan Galaxy Survey, the images of a large number of sources are being visually inspected in order to identify objects that are confused by a foreground star or galaxies that have a distinct multi-component structure.
Maunakea, Hawaii — An international team of astronomers, led by Michele Cappellari from the University of Oxford, has used data gathered by the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii to analyze the motions of stars in the outer parts of elliptical galaxies, in the first such survey to capture large numbers of these galaxies.
NASA is particularly interested in identifying planets one half to twice the size of Earth — terrestrial planets rather than the gas or ice giants or hot - super-Earths in short period orbits that evidence suggests exist in large numbers — especially ones that are located in the habitable zone of their stars.
Three of these faintly - lit bodies, located in the southern hemisphere near the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, were confirmed as dwarf galaxies, which contain stars numbering in the thousands in contrast to our galaxy, which is believed to contain over 300 billion stars.
