To meet labor market needs, the
teaching profession needs to be nurturing talent on a significantly
larger scale — and the size of other student
organizations demonstrate that it's possible.
These new teacher - voice
organizations, however, are not the only teacher groups — or the
largest groups — to push on issues around the
teaching profession.
National Education Association (NEA) President Dennis Van Roekel today laid out a new action agenda for the nation's
largest organization of educators that will help transform the
teaching profession and accelerate student learning.
These roles may include, for example: team leader, who takes responsibility for team and student growth; reach teacher, who takes responsibility for
larger - than - average student loads with the help of paraprofessionals; master educator, who develops and leads professional development and learning; peer evaluator, an accomplished educator who coaches other teachers, assesses teachers» effectiveness, and helps his or her colleagues improve their skills; and demonstration teacher, who models excellent
teaching for teachers in training.11 According to the Aspen Institute and Leading Educators — a nonprofit
organization that partners with schools and districts to promote teacher leadership — teacher leaders can model best practices, observe and coach other teachers, lead teacher teams, and participate in the selection and induction of new teachers.12
In other teacher news, the
Teach To Lead initiative — supported by ASCD and 75 other education
organizations — is now hosting regional Teacher Leadership Labs in addition to the
larger Teacher Leadership Summits.
The
organization recommends that induction programs should be «part of a
larger system of teacher development, support, accountability, and evaluation» and should focus on «
teaching practice and student learning.»
The case studies focus on
organizations influencing education on a
large scale by using engaging, empowering pedagogy to
teach twenty - first century competencies, values, and attitudes.
I could go on and on as there are endless lessons to
teach, and learn, and there are numerous ways to
teach others, whether as an individual, a small group, or a
large organization.
