If the power booster is broken it could induce a very
large vacuum leak when you hit the breaks.
Something I was just thinking about is you may have
a large vacuum leak.

leak upstream of the O2 sensor can pull in extra oxygen and mimic a
vacuum leak, even if it's not
large enough to make any noise.
Check carefully under the hood to be sure there are no air
large air
leaks in the intake system, such as the big boot at the throttle body or any other
large vacuum hoses.
