The insecticide decimated the populations of
some larger zooplankton species, resulting in a bloom of algae.
Carbon and nitrogen isotopes suggested that the fatty acids were funneled from phytoplankton to
the larger zooplankton and shrimp, and finally into fish.
This species unique ability to dive by beating its wings for propulsion allows it to hunt down
large zooplankton, especially krill.
All water was combined into an approximately 500 l container and subsampled after filtering through 80 µm mesh to remove
large zooplankton.

The
large blooms provide ample food for
zooplankton, which are also plentiful in the Strait.
Previous studies have documented the impact of plastic debris on more than 660 marine species — from the smallest of
zooplankton to the
largest whales, including fish destined for the seafood market — but none have quantified the worldwide amount entering the ocean from land.
This could likely have implications for the
zooplankton that usually graze on
larger diatoms and in turn the fish that eat those
zooplankton.
«While many branching corals dominate under normal pH conditions offering ample hiding space for the different species of
zooplankton, ocean acidification shifts the community to
large, massive bouldering corals, which offer the reef - associated plankton little opportunity for hiding».
The researchers discovered that the charr have split into two phenotypes - a
large «robust» charr that feeds on benthic
zooplankton, and a smaller more «delicate» form, which predominately feeds on plankton.
Although the work was carried out in the lab, the research is the first to show that migrating
zooplankton — or any organism — can create turbulence at a scale
large enough to mix the ocean's waters.
There's no mystery to the fact that phytoplankton feeds
zooplankton (call them copepods if you like), which in turn feeds
larger species and so on up the ocean food chain.
The predicted continuous warming trend of the ocean surface temperature is expected to favour the growth of smaller phytoplankton cells (picophytoplankton replacing
large diatoms) that in turn would also favour small - sized
zooplankton species (Li et al. 2009).
Among the
zooplankton, detritivorous components of the small size fraction (< 1000 μm) fed and reproduced actively during the same period whereas the
large fraction resumed high metabolic activity in late March, well before the spring release of ice algae and phytoplankton bloom.
