Entitled Social science and
epigenetics: opportunities and challenges, the symposium will seek to examine how multidisciplinary research into
epigenetics — the science of the
lasting marks that modify the expression of the genes encoded in our DNA — might help provide answers to societal concerns including why deprivation has such a
marked impact on child development and on health outcomes.
Last year, Feng C. Zhou of Indiana University found that when pregnant lab rats consumed a lot of alcohol, the
epigenetic marks on their embryos changed dramatically.
Although the experiment's findings are restricted to roundworms and can not be extrapolated to humans, it does
mark an important milestone in the study of the long -
lasting effects of
epigenetic changes.
These 45 variants are significantly enriched for protein - coding changes (n = 13), direct disruption of transcription - factor binding sites (n = 3), and tissue - specific
epigenetic marks (n = 10), with the
last category showing enrichment in specific immune cells among associations stronger in Crohn's disease and in gut mucosa among associations stronger in ulcerative colitis.
Measurements that are increasingly available range from those that identify transcription factor occupancy and initiation of transcription to long -
lasting and heritable
epigenetic marks such as DNA methylation.
