I thought Evangel readers would appreciate knowing about my Christianity Today interview with James Davison Hunter, Professor of Religion, Culture, and Social Theory at the University of Virginia and author of To Change the World: The Irony, Tragedy and Possibility of Christianity in
the Late Modern World (Oxford, 2010), which promises to be the most important book written on Christian cultural engagement in the last 50 years.
But economic globalization, a signature feature of
the late modern world, and precondition for today's rapid growth in China and elsewhere, is excoriated again and again.
The irony of the novel is that
the late modern world, in which we ask the self to be the sole source of meaning, value and purpose, is a world in which the survival of the self has become problematic.
More a poet and preacher than a bureaucrat, John Paul has, in Weigel's words, one central theme: in Christ, «you are greater than you imagine, and greater than
the late modern world has let you imagine.»
Not exact matches
The
latest figures are another indication of a key trend in

It is interesting to contrast Whitehead's extreme objectifying and abstractive position reflected here and stated concisely in Science and the
Modern World that «Mathematics is thought moving in the sphere of complete abstraction» (SMW 21) with his
later statement in Modes of Thought: «Hence the absolute generality of logic and mathematics vanish» (MT 98).
«Sooner or
later, we in the
modern world have to say to those who are living in a different way, «Look, we stand for freedom,»» he said.
In the past, this is the way I have myself read Whitehead's
later writings in general and Science and the
Modern World in particular.
Griffin brings together passages in Science and the
Modern World which show that, from the
later point of view, Whitehead should have drawn the conclusion of panexperientialism.
«god» was so responsible in making that «provision» for being «saved» that «he» waited tens of thousands of years after
modern man arrived on this planet (dooming countless generations to «hell» because they didn't have a chance), and then on top of that «he» implemented «his» «provision» in the middle of a freakin» desert in a time when there was no Internet and at a time when those ignorant goatherding people thought the
world was flat (thereby dooming countless more generations of people to «hell» because there was no way, for example, to even get the message to what would become the Americas 15 centuries
later).
His first metaphysical synthesis was presented in the Lowell Lectures of February 1925,
later incorporated in Science and the
Modern World.
Frustration with this problem is one of the reasons for the abandonment of the project of a realistic account of the
world in the
later modern development.
The
late Hellenistic
world out of which they come and to which they are addressed has a rather
modern feel.
In a still
later round, McHenry tries to show that the concept of prehension makes sense only in the context of panpsychism and that, consequently, the latter doctrine must be present already in Science and the
Modern World (WPSP 1 - 11).
But it may be imperative for Indians, who, arriving
late in the
modern world, are confronted with the possibility that economic growth on the model of Western consumer capitalism is no longer environmentally sustainable.
Whitehead launched what to me is the most profound critique yet made of the Kantian split of noumena from phenomena37 and thus he launched a most extraordinary attack on the foundations of the
late enlightenment, romantic,
modern, and postmodern
worlds.
There was general agreement that Whitehead's earlier books, up to and including Science and the
Modern World of 1926, would be likely to be more fruitful for this purpose than the
later Whitehead of Process and Reality.
Because when the Church entered the Hellenistic
world, and
later helped create the
world of the
modern West, it became indissolubly linked with a particular historical tradition.
But insofar as prehension, the mechanism of concretion developed in Science and the
Modern World (and
later in Process and Reality), can be interpreted in specifically human terms, this aesthetic principle is especially crucial to the increase of value in human existence, providing persons adjust themselves to it.
He uses Carl F. H. Henry's concerns about the direction of evangelicalism in the years just before the current era of conversations about mission, missions, missional, and missiology all began in our brave post-
modern or
late -
modern world.
This is the line taken by what in North America today is frequently described as «process thought»; its greatest exponent was the
late Professor Alfred North Whitehead in his works Process and Reality (his book has been re-arranged, and provided with excellent explanatory notes by D. W. Sherburne, under the title of Key to Whitehead's Process and Reality), Science and the
Modern World, Modes of Thought, Adventures of Ideas, Religion in the Making, and Symbolism, all of them written after Whitehead had joined the faculty of Harvard University in the United States in the 1920's.
In any event, as I say, this is all only imagery — achingly nostalgic and suggestive imagery — meant only to depict a way of inhabiting the
world that Heidegger believed was constitutive of our humanity but that
late modern humanity has forgotten.
In order to understand how Whitehead developed the concept of God, one may begin by comparing his earlier works such as The Principles of Natural Knowledge (1919) and The Concept of Nature (1920) with his
later works such as Science and the
Modern World (1925), Religion in the Making (1926) and Process and Reality (1929).
