Today, I was excited to be in a room of passionate people attending the Canadian Association of
Law Libraries Conference where the session
title was «Should We Still Be called Librarians?»
While the
Law Society and Great
Library websites are unusually silent on the topic, the American
library blogosphere is proudly proclaiming that David Whelan has been appointed Manager of Legal Information for the
Law Society of Upper Canada Pause to note that Great Librarian was a wonderful and hallowed
title — why would it have been abandoned?

After growing on the profits of a captive market through the publication of serial resources such as
law reports and looseleaf
titles, both of which required annual, and often lifelong, financial commitment from lawyers (and
law libraries), this source of revenue is drying up.
From a budget perspective, academic
libraries generally and
law libraries in particular have not had too onerous a time of maintaining their collections of monographs (though the time required to monitor the publishers» lists and select relevant
titles can be onerous indeed).

law firms recently of gradually reducing staff in
libraries, but adding information specialist positions with various job
titles to business development groups.
However, I thought I would say that I think you are on the right track with collaboration among the 3 major GTA
law libraries (i.e., there is no need for all 3 of you to have duplicate sets of the same

My groups have

Law Firm Research Managers,
Law Firm Knowledge Management (a subgroup of Legal IT Netowrk), and so on.
In the late 1980's and early 90's, the local union list of
titles held by local
law firm
libraries was a lifeline to librarians, and ILL didn't just help us share resources and keep costs down.
So, the
title is likely referring to the management of a
Library, Research, or Information Services, or KM operations, within the context of a
law firm or academic
law library setting.

I would add that while the
title of this article refers specifically to
law firm
libraries, the information contained within it is certainly applicable to other
law and special
libraries as well.
My bottom line is simply this: as a director of a
law library which, like most others, will never have enough money to buy everything our users would like us to have, how can I justify spending money on a
title which we have online (and in many cases, as with my two examples, for free).
Libraries within individual
law firms could agree to maintain particular
titles and share access as required.
