Though much remains to be done to mirror the
diversity profile of Canadian society,
law schools have been eager to report on their progress.
As mentioned in Part I of this column, Canadian
law schools have made significant strides in increasing their ethnic, cultural, and gender
diversity profiles over the past decade.
Canadian
law schools have certainly made concerted efforts over the past decade to ensure that their student population better reflects the ethnic, cultural, and sexual
diversity of the society it will eventually serve.
But while
law schools have made some significant forward strides in achieving a gender balance and diversifying the ethnic composition of their graduates, it is difficult to believe that they are making any headway on socioeconomic
diversity.

law firms pursue a handful of minority students at elite
schools with the purpose of accomplishing a long - standing
law firm
diversity goal: having a firm that numerically reflects the
diversity of the country, the community, and their clients.
Professor Taylor attributes this development to many factors, including the need for lower - tiered
schools to maintain revenue by (wittingly or unwittingly) using
diversity to help accomplish this goal, as well as elite
law schools using the economic downturn as an opportunity to focus more on admitting students with the highest LSAT scores.
