Another option would have been to paint a base coat of acrylic or chalk paint over the entire piece and then add
a layer of milk paint without bonding agent.
After a few
layers of milk paint I used a sanding block to heavily distress the piece.

If you put a base coat
of milk paint on a piece with the bonding agent and then put a top
layer on in another color will you get that wonderful chipping?

of using chalk
