Fast's
layered film works are all about storytelling; they have fiction at their heart.

Working side - by - side in a small restaurant and collaborating as celebrities on something like a TV show, with handlers and
layers upon
layers of pre - and post-production people, are totally different worlds; they may never even see each other while the show's
filming.

work in Happy - Go - Lucky or Vera Drake, you understand that his
films can be simplistic on the surface, while carrying multiple
layers of commentary and observations.

film also has an extra
layer of fun guesswork built in because its characters are constantly explaining how magic tricks and misdirection
work, so it's essentially giving you the answers while daring you to figure it out («The closer you look, the less you see») before the movie's over.
Upon entering I thought that I could very well be walking into yet another costume drama that takes no time whatsoever to
work on an able story (i.e. Valmont), but instead I was treated to a beautifully
layered film that is probably the second best I've seen so far this year.

works of Antonioni, I find that Philippe Garrel is a filmmaker I am maturing into, his
films revealing their

film doesn't
work is that a lovely score by Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli is buried beneath the other

work with, and while he struggles with the ridiculously hoaky demands of his part, the gorgeously expressive French actress most famous for burning down the house in Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, manages to pull off the
film's only

film follows a drudge at the Department of Records (Jonathan Pryce) who finds himself fingered as a terrorist after a fatal mix - up at
work — a story that eerily anticipates the Orwellian state of the world of today.
There is a psychological element in this
film that
works more as a gimmick than it does as an extra
layer of drama or suspense, the savvy viewer should be able to spot this obvious secret pretty early on.

film will likely earn even fewer fans but it's an even more accomplished
