The unimpeachable excellence of Isabelle Huppert's
lead performance counted for a lot (and there she is, hanging out in the Best
Actress category), plus Paul Verhoeven's name still had some of the recognition as a director of provocative American studio pictures during the Nineties.

categories it was nominated for, including foreign language film and young actor /
actress for the film's

My own list of names for Supporting
Actress contenders not listed above takes into consideration how certain contenders might be put in supporting either because the
lead category is too crowded or they would rather win in the lesser
category than be nominated and lose in the top tier.
