of the sin and the degree
of penance required for the sin to be forgiven.
Back in the»60s, we who are now «old timers» thought
of ourselves as a
new breed
of missionaries, well trained in the language and
culture of the host country and determined to help its church
leaders dismantle the structures
of dependency and paternalism.

of the Christian Coalition; efforts by Dr. James Dobson and Gary Bauer to win a «civil war
of values» by changing the
culture at a deeper level than is represented by winning elections; and, finally, by addressing crucial questions about the appropriate relationship between religion and politics or, as we usually put it, between church and state.
In response, scholars at Yale Divinity School's Center for Faith and
Culture drafted «Loving God and Neighbor Together,» which was signed by nearly 300 Christian
leaders and published in a December edition
of The
New York Times.
