learn sustainable techniques for papermaking, pen and ink,
block prints, stenciling, silkscreen and collage.
Luloff conducted a slide presentation documenting her recent trip to India where she
learned more about the process of Indian
block printing through working alongside a community of textile
block printers in a small village called Ajrakpur in the state of Gujarat in Northwestern India near Pakistan.
Participants
learn to creatively reuse a variety of (often free) supplies for papermaking, pen and ink,
block prints, silkscreen, and collage.
Students
learn the basics of relief carving and
printing blocks on an etching press.
By the end of the course, participants will have
learnt how to prepare, cut, ink and
print wood engraving
blocks (the techniques for which can also be applied to woodcutting and linocutting
blocks) and will have created at least two small wood engraving
prints to take home.
Participants will also have
learnt how to
print blocks by hand, to a high degree of sophistication, without the use of a
printing press, which is an excellent skill to enable participants to continue producing work after the course itself.
By never
printing the same color scheme and cannibalizing existing
prints and
blocks to create new projects, Nutini asserts printmaking as a means of perpetual investigation,
learning and growth.
Starting with one
block, students will
learn how to create complex multi-color
prints from one
block by removing more material between each layer.
