Last week I had the pleasure of visiting Halifax, Nova Scotia, to speak
at a professional
learning event for library support specialists in the Halifax Regional
School Board.
On Wednesday, April 11, and Thursday, April 12, 2018, our Leaders To
Learn From were recognized
at an exclusive
event in Washington, D.C., that featured presentations and discussions on
school leadership and education policy.

learned, networked and collaborated in NBOA's biggest
event ever.
But, for these discussions to grow (
at an Edcamp - style
event or otherwise), a
school must first embrace a culture of
learning.
At each of the
schools visited, we were able to experience a variety of
events including: lesson observations, meetings with teaching staff and administration,
learning about their induction programs and staff development opportunities, interviewing panels of students, observing student government classes, and visiting spirit assemblies.
One in 4 children experiences a mental health disorder annually, 73 and half of those who will have a mental health disorder
at some point in their life will first be diagnosed
at age 14 or younger.74 Furthermore, about half of all children will experience a traumatic
event — such as the death of a parent, violence, or extreme poverty — before they reach adulthood.75 And as the opioid epidemic continues to grow, students are coming to
school affected by a parent's addiction as well as the havoc and instability that it can wreak on family life.76 In addition, as students experience other issues — such as puberty; family matters, like divorce; and bullying — having supportive trained adults to talk to in
school is critical for improving their well - being and attention to
learning.
Besides
learning to accommodate the planet's natural
events, and get along with species from other planets, the inhabitants of Hypatia must
learn to defend the planet, and the young people when they're away
at school in another solar system, from hostile species.
