environment possible, effort is made to help kids stay
in a regular

The practice of teaching students with learning disabilities
in general education
classrooms is commonly referred to as inclusion, part of the
least restrictive
environment mandate included
in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA Reathorization, 2004).
With a strong push to provide true LRE (
Least Restrictive
Environment) more and more children with disabilities are spending most or all of their day
in a general education
classroom.
I've recently have had the opportunity to observe two
classrooms that functioned very differently —
in one, explicit, enforced expectations created (or at
least appeared to create) a fairly quiet, regulated
classroom environment.
Unlike my requirement
in Maine almost twenty years ago, to this day, New Jersey does not require its pre-service general education teachers to take even one credit of coursework specifically aimed at learning to teach students with special needs

least partly explains New Jersey's problematic record on implementing the

environment provisions of IDEA.

least has the potential to be, far - more diverse than the traditional brick and mortar
