There are two very important rules for
children to learn: Never touch or bother a
dog while he is eating,
and leave sleeping
dogs alone.
However, as the Mom of three I've had many
dogs and cats suddenly change their address to my house because my
child is moving, getting married,
leaving the country, has a boyfriend / girlfriend who doesn't like animals, is just too busy to care for anything other than themselves.
It is very important to watch any
dog when around
children,
and children should never be
left alone with any
dog.
If you can't provide your active supervision, then measures should be taken to separate
dogs and children while you multi-task or
leave the room.
For example: some pets are good with other pets, others are not; some are good with
children, some are not; many pets must remain inside; some
dogs dig under fences
and others climb fences; some pets have separation anxiety
and will destroy your home when
left alone.
We caution all our families that small
children should never be
left unattended with a
dog (for the sake of
child and dog alike).
