When he returned to the «lower 48» in 1946, he taught at
Black Mountain College, an important art school in North Carolina, replacing Josef Albers, who was on sabbatical
leave.
Eventually, Buckminster Fuller invited Woelffer to teach at
Black Mountain College, and Woelffer
left the New Bauhaus to do so.
In the 23 years of its existence (1933 — 56),
Black Mountain College
left its modernist stamp on students of all the arts, including Rauschenberg.

All this began to change when Peter Voulkos
left Montana and went to teach at
Black Mountain College in 1953.
And, surprisingly enough, many of these artists were connected to the Abstract Expressionist movement (the most sought - after segment in the art market) to one extent or another: a Washington D.C. - based artist Sam Gilliam was brought by David Kordansky Gallery to Frieze Art Fair in New York this year, an active member of the famous New York School Edward Dugmore was exhibited at Loretta Howard gallery just recently, and now it is Raymond Spillenger, an Abstract Expressionist who is gaining attention with an upcoming retrospective scheduled for early 2016 at the
Black Mountain College near Asheville, N.C. Spillenger, who died in November at the age of 89, abruptly
left the art scene in the late 6os, and while his fellow AbEx artists were going through mounting recognition and success at the Stable Annual, Spillenger plunged into family life and didn't show his art even to the family members.
When financially struggling
Black Mountain College closed in 1956, Rice exchanged correspondence with final rector Charles Olson in an attempted to retrieve books he had
left for the college library.
Albers
left Germany for the US in 1933, with her husband, the painter Josef Albers, to teach at the new
Black Mountain College, North Carolina, and make fabrics for design - led companies like Knoll and Rosenthal.

At
Black Mountain College, one of our principles is to
leave it to the teacher what and how he teaches.
He attended the first grade at
Black Mountain College together with two other faculty children, being taught by a BMC student, who
left after one year.
In the years that followed, Theodore was visiting several schools, amongst them the
Black Mountain public school, which he
left after one year due to its aggressive hierarchy, the Asheville Country Dayschool, the Warren Wilson Junior College, and finally the Putney School, which he considered «a little bit parallel to
