First Year Part I students are required to take Legal Research and Writing 243.0, one of the substantive courses connected with

Throughout this Article, the term «
legal writing» will be used as shorthand to refer to the required course (encompassing a two - semester course in the first year,
and, increasingly, an additional semester in the second year,
and sometimes, the third year) that covers
written and oral communication, advocacy,
legal research, analysis,
and depending on the
program, additional skills.
In administering the
program, the Director will participate in the hiring, orientation, training,
and evaluation of
legal research and writing instructors; participate in the orientation of incoming first - year law students; prepare the syllabi
and the common
writing problems used by all
legal research and writing sections; chair regular meetings of the
legal research and writing instructors to discuss course content, teaching methods,
and related issues; handle student issues related to the

Widener's
program in
legal analysis,
writing,
and research is a collaboratively developed three - semester sequence of required courses.
Law school deans
and faculties have come to recognize that
legal writing courses provide the opportunity for teaching essential skills that are unlikely to be taught nearly as well elsewhere in the law school curriculum, that there is an essential core content to an excellent
legal writing program,
and that effective teaching of that content requires professional
legal writing faculty who regularly devote substantial portions of their effort to teaching
legal writing,
research,
and analysis.7
This
program was
researched and proposed by the then co-directors of the Michigan State University College of Law
legal writing program, Professors Deanne Lawrence, Nancy Costello,
and Daphne O'Regan,
and authorized by the MSU Law faculty.
Although we will refer to these
programs as LRW
programs, this Article is inclusive of any first - year
legal research and writing class that serves to provide students with the basic skills in
researching legal issues
and drafting the documents meant to convey that
research, such as memoranda, briefs,
and client letters.
Criticisms of part - time
programs continued through the 1950s
and 1960s,
and some scholars questioned the viability of certain instruction in part - time
programs due to concerns about the ability of part - time
programs to teach students
legal research and writing in addition to questions about whether these
programs provided adequate seminars for students.42 These critics essentially argued that evening
programs were not capable of preparing students under ««modern conditions.
