The 1830s saw more fits and starts in the founding of university - based schools,

with the impression that the apprentice system was an idyllic time when tutor and pupil collaborated on learning necessary

Students argued the moot court questions before the professor, but Harvard also involved
legal writing, in that students drew up the pleadings, bills of exceptions, demurrers to evidence, special verdicts, and motions
with the professor's help.100 In his report to Harvard's Board of Overseers, Professor Stearns touted the value of these practical
skills exercises,
writing that «no other exercise is so powerful an excitement to industry and emulation or so strongly interests the student in their professional pursuits.»

A lot of
skills necessary for a successful law career can be developed equally as much, if not more,
with a non-law degree — for example, an English literature degree requires you to take complex pieces of
writing and analyse them closely, much like you might be doing
with legal documents and cases.
160 These critiques are essential to acquiring the important basic
skills of
legal thinking.161 In addition, clinicians and
legal writing faculty «spend the most individualized time
with students.»
The statistics for the proportion of experts trained in
legal report
writing and courtroom
skills, at 80 %, coincide
with findings of a recent survey by the CityUniversity.
Next week I will have the opportunity to join
with a number of colleagues on a panel to discuss
with law school students the importance of
legal research and
writing, largely in anticipation of them becoming lawyers on graduation and needing to have certain
skills in order to excel in their profession (and I think it is great that this law school is making this kind of session available to students).

During the study period, students understood the importance of the

writing seminar program because the program and content were fully integrated into the
legal writing courses, present on a common syllabus, and referenced often by the
legal writing professors, who shared common curriculum goals and vocabulary
with the seminar program.39 The
writing specialist's name, contact information, and office hours appeared at the head of every
legal writing course syllabus, below the main professor's name.
Ideally, faculty would incorporatea range of email assignments, and students would have multiple opportunities to practice communicating
legal analysis in emails in a variety of contexts.45 Indeed, this is one of the consistent themes that comes out of surveys of practicing attorneys: the recommendation for more frequent, shorter assignments to prepare students for the tasks they are most likely to have as new attorneys.46 But the reality is that first - year
legal writing classes are already overloaded
with content, making it difficult to incorporate numerous email assignments.47 And eliminating traditional, complex memo and brief assignments is also problematic, as those assignments build critical
skills in complex
legal reasoning.48
Although we will refer to these programs as LRW programs, this Article is inclusive of any first - year
legal research and
writing class that serves to provide students
with the basic
skills in researching
legal issues and drafting the documents meant to convey that research, such as memoranda, briefs, and client letters.
