This treaty was violated and ignored within a couple years
of its signing, although in 1980, the United
States Supreme Court upheld certain aspects
of its
legality, offering as compensation a cash settlement that the current Sioux tribes continue to reject, insisting on the return
of the Black Hills in
particular according to the articles
of the 1868 treaty.
