The Azawakh, formerly known as Tuareg Sloughi, is a breed of lean,
leggy dog that originated in the Sahel region of Africa.
The purpose was to obtain a less
leggy dog with a better coat and shorter muzzle.
In popular literature it denotes the prick - eared,
leggy dog with a curled tail from the early Egyptian age, but it was also used with reference to the lop - eared «saluki / sloughi» type; it was one of several types of dogs in Ancient Egypt, particularly the latter type had an appearance most similar to that of a greyhound.
Over time, breeders began breeding the American Staffordshire Terriers into two groups - a larger,
leggier dog and a shorter, stockier dogs.
In America, where these dogs were used not only as pit fighters, but also as catch dogs (i.e., for forcibly retrieving stray hogs and cattle) and as guardians of family, the breeders started producing a slightly larger,
leggier dog.
The flat coated retriever, despite being superficially similar to a golden retriever, is a lighter weight and
leggier dog.
The lean,
leggy dogs have some similarities to salukis, another hound breed from North Africa.
Not exact matches
The final result when skeletally mature (about 20 - 30 months old) was a tall,
leggy, but thin
dog with relatively less muscle mass than his un-neutered counterpart.

Dog tended to vary from region to region with some areas producing larger, stronger
dogs, and other areas producing smaller, faster, more
leggy or rangy animals.

The body must be of sufficient length to permit a straight, free and efficient stride; but the
dog should never appear low and long or tall and
leggy in outline.
The
dog must be of balanced proportions and appear neither
leggy nor too low to ground; and neither too short nor too long in body.
However, this

dog is gaining popularity outside its desert home.
