And in the future, a technique called optical interferometry, which links together the observations of more than one telescope, might make it possible to see the multiple
lensed images produced by the planets of another star system.

In this new discovery, the
lensing power of the mammoth galaxy cluster Abell 2744, nicknamed Pandora's Cluster,
produced three magnified
images of the same galaxy.
The quasar
image in the original
image of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which has been used for the actual survey to identify gravitational
lensing, looks only slightly extended, but the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
image clearly exhibits two distinct quasar
images (white) as well as a massive galaxy in between the quasar
images (orange) that
produces gravitational
lensing.
If the
lensing effect is strong, then multiple
images of a distant galaxy will be
produced and the separation angle between the multiple
images gives us the mass of the
lensing object (in this case, the closer galaxy or galaxy cluster).
«The polarization of the waves coming from the background quasar, combined with the fact that the waves
producing the two
lensed images traveled through different parts of the intervening galaxy, allowed us to learn some important facts about the galaxy's magnetic field,» said Sui Ann Mao, Minerva Research Group Leader for the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany.
