less a character piece disguised as a raunchy comedy.

The Bible is full of fairy tales and should only be taken as a
piece of literature of great importance just as the Odyssey is, but it shouldn't be used to govern one's life, much
less to help build a relationship with the biggest fictional and ever - changing
character in human history.
It takes a similar plot (a girl's inexplicable obsession with a jerk as the crux of a police investigation), similar structure (flashbacks and an unreliable narrator expose the truth of the jerk's vanishing act), similar setting (a gothic academy), and even a similar conclusion (Abandon's is a million times sadder, if atonally winking in and of itself), but Gaghan, besides sparking with his
characters in a way that is foreign to the makers of The Hole (there, director Nick Hamm is
less interested in compulsion than in repulsion), has no use for sensationalism — The Hole is a
piece of tabloid reportage next to Abandon, which wallows humanistically in the epidemic of loneliness.
His recent pictures, including the 1950s psychodrama «The Master» and the»70s noir «Inherent Vice,» feel
less like stylized period
pieces than weird, indelible relics of their respective eras — impeccably crafted, rich in mystery and deeply attuned to their
characters» turbulent inner states.
I wish «Milk» had been more of a
character piece and
less of a manifesto.
While it allows Bronson to be a little
less serious than the brooding
characters he's better known for, the plot is an utter mess and the rescue attempts (there are several) are nothing more than a string of haplessly assembled action
pieces that only serve to illustrate what a terrible rescuer Colton is (as is his sidekick of sorts, played by Randy Quaid).

less of a problem when we come to realize this isn't a

While the thin story is divided into tonally conflicting parts that move at different paces, it is
less tiring than following one indestructible
character through dull set
pieces — an annoying staple of this genre until now.
Smoothly edited, tautly paced, it's
less a technical
piece than a surprisingly cerebral play revolving around the interactions of smart people doing their best to squelch that last iota of empathy squirming around in them — the ultimate undoing of at least one major
character.
Compared to the precise
character study of Obvious Child, it's a sprawling and
less focused
piece, but the film remains eminently appealing thanks to its wide - ranging empathy and lived - in performances.
Some of the
characters are even heartwarming and charming, such as Barry (Michael Cera) as a defective hot dog often bullied by his peers; he goes through the tried - and - true story arc of finding courage while also realizing that his differences don't make him any
less of a person... err,
piece of meat, and it's a joy to watch.
As a
piece of Christian propaganda it fails on the level of emotional manipulation because you couldn't care
less about the
