For ores that contain even
less concentrated uranium — McArthur River is the most concentrated active mine — the proportion of waste in radium and other
radioactive elements (as well as toxic heavy
metals such as arsenic and mercury) is even higher — and McArthur River's uranium is much
less concentrated than the mines of the past like nearby Rabbit Lake or Shinkolobwe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Katanga Province.
