Creatures When dropping Toki in a nest, birds now have a «cooldown», so they won't instantly pick you up again when walking out of the nest Birds don't stop anymore when they sense vibration, making them

Will
less ice and
snow in the Arctic during winter increase, decrease or be about the same radiation loss
as years with thick multiyear ice?
The Independent story headline is a small gamble, there can be massive cloud coverage (occurring
as I write) continuing from the usual great
snow and ice Arctic summer melt, but I am quite sure the ice extent may be equal or
less than last year come September 20.
If the warmer air has
less moisture,
as over a desert, then there is
less snow, right?
But
as warming turns tundra shrubs, which can be covered by
snow, into tall trees, researchers fear that
less light will be bounced back creating a feedback loop that will worsen climate change.
So; more
snow and coldness is because is
less and
less ice on Arctic
as shield / insulator for the water.
For the entire Northern Hemisphere, there is evidence of an increase in both storm frequency and intensity during the cold season since 1950,1 with storm tracks having shifted slightly towards the poles.2, 3 Extremely heavy snowstorms increased in number during the last century in northern and eastern parts of the United States, but have been
less frequent since 2000.11,15 Total seasonal snowfall has generally decreased in southern and some western areas, 16 increased in the northern Great Plains and Great Lakes region, 16,17 and not changed in other areas, such
as the Sierra Nevada, although
snow is melting earlier in the year and more precipitation is falling
as rain versus
snow.18 Very snowy winters have generally been decreasing in frequency in most regions over the last 10 to 20 years, although the Northeast has been seeing a normal number of such winters.19 Heavier - than - normal snowfalls recently observed in the Midwest and Northeast U.S. in some years, with little
snow in other years, are consistent with indications of increased blocking (a large scale pressure pattern with little or no movement) of the wintertime circulation of the Northern Hemisphere.5 However, conclusions about trends in blocking have been found to depend on the method of analysis, 6 so the assessment and attribution of trends in blocking remains an active research area.
And if there's
less precipitation that could mean
less snow cover
as well - on the short time scales of a year or two while the effect is still being felt.
Keep in mind there's a dearth of insolation at high latitudes so albedo becomes increasingly
less important so
snow cover over land doesn't mean
as much.
Global warming's crystal ball is clearing
as climate models improve, and scientists now predict that some regions will see a month's
less rain and
snow by 2100.
«The spring months have sometimes storms of wind and thunder even so early
as March within these last years the Climate seems to be greatly changed the summer so backward with very little rain and even
snow in winter much
less than usual and the ground parched that all summer have entirely dried up...»
But with several factors combining to increase temperatures in Greenland and reduce the reflectivity of the
snow and ice cover, the ice sheet is becoming
less efficient at reflecting that heat energy, and
as a consequence melt seasons are becoming more severe.
In particular, more winter and spring flooding and drier summers are expected
as well
as less winter
snow (more rain) and earlier snowmelt.
Winters are shorter, fewer cold records are set, more precipitation is falling
as rain and
less as snow — although whopper snowstorms are even more likely in some places — and snowpacks are shrinking and melting earlier.
Overlay all of that on a trend of a changing climate, and the data are pretty clear that in the Sierra Nevada, over time, we're going to see more precipitation fall
as rain and
less as snow.
We had extreme cold weather (coldest on record, I believe) so what we usually get
as rain fell
as snow (in fact,
less, because precipitation for December was actually unusually low).
Shallow
snow cover over birthing lairs, which are built against pressure ridges
as shown in the diagram above (considered to be
less than 25 - 32 cm over the lair, or
less than 20 cm over flat ice), 1 can mean the
snow caves are easier for polar bears to break into (and consume the pup)-- that's good news for polar bears (in the short term) but bad news for ringed seals.
A recent report from Climate Central shows that there will be an increase in the continuing trend of more rain and
less snow during US winters, which will impact the Pacific Northwest, California and other parts of the United States
as well.
Some predictions show that in the decades to come, more of California's mountain precipitation will fall
as rain and
less as snow.
Gallup's research discovered that about half the public associates warmer weather with global warming (the other half sees it
as normal variation); fewer associate
snow and cold weather with global warming because «the connection [is]
less intuitive.»
