North America, Europe and Asia have all seen a trend toward
less snow cover between 1960 and 2015, according to 2016 research published in the journal Current Climate Change Reports.
Warmer winters and
less snow cover in recent years have contributed to increased deer populations62 that degrade forest understory vegetation.82
And if there's less precipitation that could mean
less snow cover as well - on the short time scales of a year or two while the effect is still being felt.
A model by the Purdue Climate Change Research Center in West Lafayette forecasts, by 2050, the full growing seasons will expand by one month; there will be 33 to 45 more days with temperatures above 90 degrees; an increase in precipitation between 14 percent and 22 percent; and 24 days to 36 days
less snow cover.
Not exact matches
Unfortunately, the projections suggest that future average winter snowfall will be ten times
less than present day amounts, virtually erasing all
snow cover.
This past September the National
Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., which collects polar and ice information for the government, announced that there was
less sea ice
covering the Arctic Ocean than at any time since satellite measurements began in 1979.
In urban areas during the winter when
snow cover is
less pervasive, temperatures are higher than rural areas in the daytime by an average of 2 °F.
But some skiers — perhaps the
less experienced or
less lucky — will fall, often hitting obstacles
covered in
snow.
Unless you live where the roads are regularly
covered in
snow and ice or the noted compromises are worth the over-the-top security during a wicked storm, I'd seriously consider a
less aggressive winter tire.
Of course this is all probably of
less import on the high - speed, paved corners of Big Willow than the

less light will be bounced back creating a feedback loop that will worsen climate change.
Keep in mind there's a dearth of insolation at high latitudes so albedo becomes increasingly
less important so
snow cover over land doesn't mean as much.
But with several factors combining to increase temperatures in Greenland and reduce the reflectivity of the
snow and ice
cover, the ice sheet is becoming
less efficient at reflecting that heat energy, and as a consequence melt seasons are becoming more severe.
I know PVs are more efficient when they are cold, but I would suspect they are
less efficient when
covered with
snow or frost.
Accordingly, there will be
less precipitation in form of
snow too, and
snow covers will be prone to melting faster.
These stem from a diversity of site - specific conditions, including, but not limited to: local vegetation; presence of building structures and contributions made by such structures involving energy use, heating and air conditioning, etc; exposure to winds, the wind velocities determined by climatic factors and also whether certain wind directions are more favored than others by terrain or the presence or absence thereof to bodies of water; proximity to grass, asphalt, concrete or other material surfaces; the physical conditions of the CRS itself which include: the exact location of the temperature sensors within it, the degree of unimpeded flow of external air through the CRS, the character of the paint used; the exact height of the instrument above the external surface (noting that when the ground is
covered by 3 feet of
snow, the temperature instrument is about 60 % closer to, or
less than 2 feet, above an excellent radiating surface, much closer than it would be under
snow - free conditions).
In 2011, annual
snow cover extent over Northern Hemisphere continents (including the Greenland ice sheet) averaged 24.7 million square kilometers, which is 0.3 million square kilometers
less than the long - term average.
Polar bears are one of the most sensitive Arctic marine mammals to climate warming because they spend most of their lives on sea ice.35 Declining sea ice in northern Alaska is associated with smaller bears, probably because of
less successful hunting of seals, which are themselves ice - dependent and so are projected to decline with diminishing ice and
snow cover.36, 37,38,39 Although bears can give birth to cubs on sea ice, increasing numbers of female bears now come ashore in Alaska in the summer and fall40 and den on land.41 In Hudson Bay, Canada, the most studied population in the Arctic, sea ice is now absent for three weeks longer than just a few decades ago, resulting in
less body fat, reduced survival of both the youngest and oldest bears, 42 and a population now estimated to be in decline43 and projected to be in jeopardy.44 Similar polar bear population declines are projected for the Beaufort Sea region.45
Shallow
snow cover over birthing lairs, which are built against pressure ridges as shown in the diagram above (considered to be
less than 25 - 32 cm over the lair, or
less than 20 cm over flat ice), 1 can mean the
snow caves are easier for polar bears to break into (and consume the pup)-- that's good news for polar bears (in the short term) but bad news for ringed seals.
What is clear is that a warming world will also be a world with
less ice and
snow cover.
This year was
less than the previous record by a million square kilometres — so no help there, In fact reduced
snow cover has been compounding the problem.
You won't do it of course because I suspect you know just as well I that merely changing 70 % of the planet's surface albedo from the
less than 1 % of the ocean to the 15 % of dirt and rocks will reflect enough additional shortwave energy away from the planet that the bloody thing will be
covered in
snow faster than you can say Al Gore's Momma Wears Combat Boots.
It should be easy enough for you to do... You won't do it of course because I suspect you know just as well I that merely changing 70 % of the planet's surface albedo from the

Add in the jokers —
less melt ponds, more
snow cover, stressed / weaker ice pack, the volume perhaps more concentrated in areas that melt out — and the height of the 2017 melt season could go any - which - way.
We have lost lives because of
less predictability in ice and
snow cover.
