Atleast in the early part of last season, we saw an Arsene Wenger that was willing to go into games with a pragmatic approach, closing out games with 1 - 0 leads and
lesser possession stats!

Things like overall record (without looking into if there is mitigating circumstances), Total defense (trash
stat that doesn't take into account quality of offenses played), Total offense (same as total defense), scoring average (much
less telling than points per
possession), etc..
Check out this report in the Daily Mail that shows our
possession stats of
less than 27 percent against the German giants were the lowest of any match Arsenal have won under Wenger.
I agree I think he is OK but have to be wary of defensive
stats for lower half teams — their DMs are working harder; their teams generally have
less possession, under attack more often and have to put in more tackles, interceptions etc..
Always dubious of defensive
stats — teams with high
possession have
less defending to do.
The
stats may show that the team with
less possession wins but it is dangerous to adopt it as a tactic in the last few minutes where the opposition are desperately in search of an equaliser — even with 10 men.
